What's the problem with personal vehicles?

Personal vehicles account for roughly two-thirds of transportation-related emissions, emitting around 24 pounds of carbon dioxide and other global-warming gases for every gallon of gas. About five pounds comes from the extraction, production, and delivery of the fuel, while most of the heat-trapping emissions—more than 19 pounds per gallon—comes right out of a car’s tailpipe.

Emissions from flights are released directly into the atmosphere, triggering chemical reactions and atmospheric effects that heat the planet for several centuries. If the aviation industry were a country, it would place sixth in emissions. It is responsible for 12 percent of transportation emissions.
